Star Wars deflector shields are possible to create?

A new research paper has revealed that science fiction shielding is not as far-fetched as it might seem.

Deflector shields have been a staple of science fiction movies and TV shows such as Star Wars and Star Trek for years and now it looks as though it might actually be possible to build one.

According to a new science paper from the University of Leicester the construction of a working deflector shield could be achieved by using a ball of super-hot plasma.

One of the main influences of this idea is the Earth's own ionosphere.

"The ionosphere is plasma, and extends from roughly 50km above the surface of the Earth to the edge of space," said Alexander Toohie who co-authored the paper. "Just like the plasma described in our paper, it reflects certain frequencies of electromagnetic radiation, in this case radio frequencies."

The paper's authors also remain optimistic that the same technology could be used in other applications, such as in the containment of radiation within a nuclear reactor.

It might be a few years before we see it being used in a spaceship, though.

UFO near UK naval base?

Several people witnessed an unidentified object in the skies over Portreath on the night of April 27th.

The object passed overhead at around 11pm and generated several reports by residents who described it as "quite large" and "triangular" in shape. A Cornwall based UFO research group has been appealing for more witnesses to come forward.

"It had a lot of white lights at the front but none that I could see at the back," said group founder Dave Gillham who also saw the object. "It came from the Porthreath area and very slowly and quieter than a helicopter or plane [and] headed towards Helston."

One witness who tried to take footage of the object as it passed above her reported that the video she'd captured had been mysteriously wiped from her phone.

The triangular craft was last seen heading in the direction of the nearby RNAS Culdrose naval base.

Big-coast cities are sinking down?

Subsiding land could prove to be a bigger threat to some large cities than rising sea levels.

When we think to the future and to the impact of global warming on population centers around the world the first thing that springs to mind is the effect that rising sea levels will have on low-lying cities located on the world's coastlines.

Yet eating away at the foundations of these cities is a hidden threat that could prove disastrous long before the melting of the ice caps has a chance to take its toll. In some parts of the world the coast is subsiding at a rate ten times greater than the rate at which the sea level is rising.

"Land subsidence and sea level rise are both happening, and they are both contributing to the same problem - larger and longer floods, and bigger inundation depth of floods," said Dr Gilles Erkens.

"The most rigorous solution and the best one is to stop pumping groundwater for drinking water, but then of course you need a new source of drinking water for these cities."

What has been picked up on Loch Ness sonar?

A cruise vessel has picked up an 'unusual' reading of an unidentified object in the depths of Loch Ness.

The Loch Ness Monster was in the news again this week when the Jacobite Queen, a cruise vessel that carries thousands of tourists up and down the loch every year, reported that it had picked up a mysterious hit on its underwater scanning equipment.

"The Jacobite Queen spends every day sailing up and down the loch with the sonar on and this reading is the most unusual we have seen for quite some time," said skipper John Askew.

While the hit itself is inconclusive, this incident coupled with the satellite image taken on Apple's mobile map application two weeks ago has helped to reinvigorate interest in the monster legend.

"It's impossible to tell what we've picked up here, but along with those satellite images, you can't help feeling that reports of the Loch Ness Monster's demise may be premature," said Askew.

Finding for signs of life on exoplanet is extremelly hard!

Finding signs of extraterrestrial life on an extrasolar planet is going to be a lot harder than expected.

As astronomers continue to identify new extrasolar planets in orbit around distant stars, the question on everybody's lips is whether or not any of these distant worlds could be home to extraterrestrial life.

Despite recently finding a rocky Earth-sized world in the habitable zone of another solar system, astronomers are still unable to determine whether this planet or any other in the distant reaches of space could support life. Larger, more powerful telescopes in the future could potentially accomplish this, but there are still other obstacles to overcome.

The current method for identifying whether or not a planet is habitable involves looking for bio-signatures in its atmosphere such as methane and oxygen, chemicals that are usually associated with life. The problem however is that these chemicals can also exist on barren worlds with no life on them at all, leading to the possibility of false positives.

"There are plenty of reasons to be optimistic that we will find hints of extraterrestrial life within the next few decades, just maybe not on an Earth-like planet around a Sun-like star," said study lead author Hanno Rein.

Ghost chasing girl taped!

She went to explore a "haunted" castle, but she didn't expect that she will get chased by a paranormal being, a ghost.

Click on the video below to watch it, but be carefull, it get's pretty disturbing.

After the girl saw the chair next to her started moving on "itself", she jumped back, but, unfortunatelly, that's not it. The girl turned back and saw a sort of faded human-like object moving across the room, then suddenly started moving towards her. She fell and lost her consciousness. Two hours later local servants came, as they keep the haunted place clean. They found the girl laying down on the floor. "First thing I tought is that she was dead there" said M. K. "She wasn't moving, and she showed no signs of life.." he continued. "When I checked her pulse, it was weak, but it was there. I realised that I need to take her to the local hospital". Later diagnosed, she had only her left arm broken. She said that she will never enter a "haunted" place again.
